2 DSOs Restructure their Leadership Teams

Select Dental Management and The Smilist Management, although totally unrelated groups, have a few things in common. Both growing groups have been awarded the title of Group Dentistry Now’s ‘Emerging Groups to Watch’: The Smilist Management in 2022 and Select Dental Management in 2020. Both are headquartered in the Northeastern region of the United States. And both have made C-suite shifts this week.

Select Dental Management, an Inc. 500 Dental Partnership Organization, announced that healthcare executive Stephen Saukaitis has been appointed as Chief Executive Officer and to the Select Dental Management Board of Directors. Co-Founder Elliot Zibel will move from CEO into the newly created Chief Strategy Officer role, where he’ll focus on business development and strategic growth initiatives.

The Smilist Management, Inc. announced the appointment of Andrew Mintz as Chief Executive Officer. Patricia Mahony will move from CEO to COO.

Select Dental Management

Select Dental Management was founded in February of 2018 by two life-long friends, Elliot Zibel, former institutional investor, and Dr. Jonathan Mason.

“Being able to partner with an experienced growth leader like Steve will empower Select to continue our path of rapid growth and expansion. Steve’s experience will continue to drive our organic growth and enable us to continue to successfully partner with right-fit practices,” says Elliot Zibel.

Saukaitis brings more than 20 years of experience in building and scaling healthcare companies including both start-up and large public companies. Most recently, he served as the CEO of Consensus Health, a multi-specialty medical group and provider network offering an alternative partnership model for physicians and improved patient outcomes.

“Select’s model is differentiated by our collaboration with our partner dentists and our commitment to building strong relationships with all of our doctors. With Steve’s extensive experience partnering with clinicians to grow healthcare organizations, we will continue to exceed expectations with patient care, experience and outcomes,” says Dr. Mason.

Select Dental Management is a Dental Partnership Organization providing dental management services and currently partnered with 38 dental practices in 8 states and Washington D.C. from the Northeast to the Mid-Atlantic. Select employs more than 100 dentists and 600 additional team members providing care to over 110,000 patients each year.

“Select’s unique people-centric partnership model, including their commitment to their teams and patients, as well as their principles of shared accountability, collaboration and partnership, makes Select a great cultural fit for me,” Saukaitis notes.

The appointment also comes with news of additional funding from Select’s current capital partners. This funding will be deployed for both organic growth initiatives and to drive additional partnerships.

The Smilist Dental

Andrew Mintz brings a wealth of expertise to this role, having previously served as Chief Executive Officer for several very successful healthcare services platforms. He has a culture-first approach, an innovative mindset and the strategic capabilities to scale organizations and drive value for stakeholders.

Andrew’s hiring comes after a year of impressive growth for The Smilist, in which the organization added 15 locations and entered two new states, Pennsylvania and Connecticut. The Smilist is backed by Zenyth Partners and also last year welcomed new investor partners to the business, a consortium led by funds managed by BlackRock and by Manulife Investment Management, to support and accelerate the company’s growth.

“We are thrilled to welcome Andrew to The Smilist to build on our positive momentum. He is a transformational leader that will propel The Smilist and our teams into the next phase of growth and innovation while advancing our commitment to our providers, patients and staff,” shared Robert Feuer, Managing Partner of Zenyth Partners and Co-Founder and Chairman of The Smilist.

Since its founding in 2014 by Robert Feuer and Philip Toh, The Smilist has rapidly grown in the Northeast supporting over 60 locations with over 1,000 employees in New YorkNew JerseyConnecticut and Pennsylvania.

Andrew relates, “I’m honored to join The Smilist and I look forward to working with all team members to accelerate innovation, boost performance and grow the organization to its full potential. The Smilist has a strong brand, a deep operational foundation, clear values and a dedication to high-quality patient care. In the next phase of development, we’ll look to further enhance The Smilist’s standing in the market with strategic initiatives aimed at building upon our strengths, differentiating our services and enhancing patient and employee experiences.”
