It was an amazing week online of connections, sharing ideas, and newfound friendships as The DEO hosted over 300 attendees. The 2020 DEO Virtual Summer Summit, June 4-5 included 12 speakers, 4 panels, 8 ask the expert sessions, 4 peer topic discussions, 4 networking breakouts, plus a women in dentistry session, an online reception, and more!

The annual event has grown from a small gathering of just 60 attendees in Seattle to what it has become today — the premier event of its kind, where the best of the best in the field of group dentistry, budding dental-entrepreneurs, and business leaders gather to network, learn, and share the stories that help newbies to grow and experienced businesses to gain insight.

But this year was markedly different — attendees needed more guidance and insight arguably than ever before — and The Summit took place, in a new, exciting, and safe socially-distanced way, in an online virtual format, the first of its kind in the industry.

The virtual format afforded the option to increase and to offer additional learning and networking opportunities before The Summit began. A networking session was held for clinicians and non-clinicians. Additionally, a bonus expert webinar featured Brent L. Saunier, Dental CPA, Managing Partner, Pro-Fi 20/20 CPAs, and Paul Edwards, CEO and Co-founder, CEDR HR Solutions, discussing super hot topics in this new post-coved landscape: HR & accounting.

Wednesday, June 3, was the unofficial kickoff for the Summer Summit. The DEO’s Dr. Charles Moser hosted an incredible welcome reception with over 150 attendees and games, breakouts, and fun for the whole group.

Summit Day 1, June 5:

CEO of the DEO Jake Puhl opened by offering a warm DEO welcome to attendees, sponsors, and speakers, and introduced the event’s stellar MC, The DEO’s Senior Faculty Emmet Scott, CEO, Community Dental Partners.

Day 1 featured a star-studded cast of speakers and experts, including Travis Franklin, CFO, Heartland Dental; A.J. Peak, CEO, Peak Dental Services;  Dr. Glenn Vo, Founder, and CEO, Nifty Thrifty Dentists; Alyssa Keefer, Co-founder, JoyFULL People, and Eric Roman, DDS, Visionary & Coach discussing topics from “Scaling Up Your DSO”  to “Getting Back Your Time with Virtual Assistants” and more. Other highlights of the day included an ask the expert sessions with our sponsor-partners, peer discussion topic sessions with topics such as “M&A: Buying and Selling Locations” and “Making Your Team Feel Safe.”

Attendees found that in many ways, the virtual setting was even better than an in-person setting because they were able to utilize the chat to interact with each other and the presenters in real-time. It was a great benefit throughout the entire event!

Summit Day 2, June 5:

Day 2 was epic to say the least. The day kicked off with our Women in Dentistry event featuring Dee Fischer where we had over 80 people in attendance, breaking records held at our in-person conferences for the same event!

We followed with another amazing day of speakers, experts, and panelists, including Steve Bilt, CEO, Smile Brands Inc.; Tarek Aly, MBA, CVA, COO/Co-owner, OrthoDent Management, LLC; Cheryl Penava, VP Practice Excellence, Mortenson Dental Partners; Ken Kaufman, CFO, Community Dental Partners; and more on topics from “Leading Your Dental Group, Your Team, and Yourself Through Crisis” to “Team Communication, Team Safety and Resetting to the New Normal”.

The day also included more ask the expert sessions and panels. Dr. Rick Workman, Founder, and Executive Chairman, Heartland Dental finished the event with an inspiring and heartfelt discussion with Emmet Scott.

The DEO continued its longstanding tradition of helping like-minded dentist-entrepreneurs form connections, create lasting bonds, and get the information and support they need to grow successful DSOs and dental practices. The Summit reinforced our mission to lift up dentist-entrepreneurs seeking to achieve their own personal vision of growth and success.
