School Your Children in Dental Hygiene this Summer

Great Expressions Dental Centers offers tips on keeping up with dental hygiene over the summer.

BLOOMFIELD HILLS, Mich. – June 8, 2015 – School bells have rang and students are now out of class for the summer. Between family vacations, spending time with friends and cold sugary treats, dental hygiene routines can be pushed to the back burner. Great Expressions Dental Centers (GEDC) has put together five tips for parents to help ensure their children are not ditching their dental hygiene routines this summer along with their school books.

“It’s important for parents to show their children what they can do to keep up with their dental routine, especially when there is a disruption of a regular routine, like summer break,” said Dr. Vincent Lizzio with Great Expressions Dental Centers. “Dental hygiene is a year round practice and it does not have to be hard. Our tips will ensure dental hygiene is top of mind but not taking away from all the fun to be had throughout the summer.”

To encourage proper dental hygiene routines this summer, GEDC offers the following vital tips:

1. Two minutes, two times a day. Children should brush their teeth for two minutes, twice a day and floss before each brush. To encourage frequent brushing, find flavored toothpaste or allow them to choose their own toothbrush.

2. Supervised brushing. For young children, parents should try monitoring their kids as they attempt brushing – making sure their teeth are thoroughly brushed/clean.

3. Limit sugary sweets and soda/juices. Healthy eating can help fight tooth decay and also can stimulate your gums and boost the production of saliva. Try homemade granola bars, hummus and “ants” on a log. It’s best to avoid sports/energy drinks because they are loaded with sugars. Milk and water are the safest drinks of choice for young children.

4. Sports protection. With summer sport activities picking up, more and more patients are coming in with teeth-related sports injuries. Help prevent that by picking up an Under Armour Braces and Under Armour Armourshield™ mouth guards, the leading dental safeguard, at a GEDC location for your child. GEDC also offers other custom athletic guards.

5. Bring your children along to your dentist appointments. Form the habit of visiting twice annually and discuss your children’s health concerns with the dentist (even if it’s not oral-related) since there can be underlying connections.
