2021 started out much like 2020 – with optimism, but a lot of uncertainty. The DSO industry continued to see mass consolidation in 2021, and at an increased pace from 2020. We saw the growth of specialty DSOs as well as continued consolidation at the top. Newer partner models continued to evolve and become increasingly popular. Recruitment and retention continued to be the biggest challenges for DSOs. Almost equally challenging was finding quality acquisitions for affiliation. Single practices, emerging dental group platforms and well built, centralized DSOs saw the highest valuations to date. Lastly, investors continued to favor dentistry and DSO platforms as an incredible place to grow their investments.
Group Dentistry Now had our best year ever in 2021. We continued to innovate and bring increased, relevant news to the industry. We added two additional featured columns that have become extremely popular: DSO Deal Roundup and DSO People! New DSO and Dental Group Hires, Promotions & Awards. We published over 30 Group Dentistry Now Show podcasts in 2021 and 8 DSO Study Club webinars. GDN also partnered with HR for Health to bring the Emerging Groups to Watch awards to life. We celebrated the 2021 winners with a formal awards night in San Francisco in September. The event brought in over 300 people from North and Central America – recap article HERE.
